Umbrales

Seven doorways of light.

Light sculpture, Berlin, 2026

An umbral is a paradoxical place: it joins at the same time as it separates. It belongs to the space we are leaving and to the one we are about to inhabit, and inside it something is always suspended — something still remains while another possibility begins.

Seven doors, then, are not seven rooms but seven forms of a biography in movement. Each marks a turn, a loss, an arrival or a decision; none exists separately, and each changes the meaning of the ones still to come.

We do not occupy space as an object occupies a coordinate: we inhabit it, and the body is where depth begins. There is no passage without a body — and standing still is enough. The visitor need not walk. What crosses is the person.

Light does not merely reveal the doors. At moments it constructs them, at others it dissolves them, and the limit stops being stable. The work needs duration: something has to change before us.

Memory here is not the recovery of a past but the placing of something in relation to the present again. Every return contains a difference, and yet something continues.

That is where the word transcendence belongs, in its simplest sense: to leave the limits of oneself and to remain in what one has touched. The umbral can disappear; the experience of having crossed it remains.
